Why You Might Need Brake Fluid Exchange

Brake fluid exchange is recommended with all cars, whether it's mentioned in the owner's manual or not, and is typically conducted every 2-3 years or every 24,000 to 36,000 miles. In theory, the brake fluid should be fine at such a time, however, there's no way to tell for certain without draining the fluid for inspection. If it has contamination such as tiny pieces of chipped off moving parts, flakes from an internal system gasket, condensation, or road debris, it may need to be flushed a few times to clean out the system. If there is apparent and noticeable burning, the technician will need to further investigate the brake system to determine what is causing the problem.

Brake Pad Replacement

Brake pads have a system that theoretically lets the driver know when they need replacement. Unfortunately, it's a mechanical system and doesn't always work as intended, as it relies on appropriate OEM replacement parts being properly installed. It's always a good idea to make a visual assessment of the state of the brake pads from time to time.

When You Might Need Rotor Resurfacing or Replacement

Although brake pads are softer than the rotors and calipers against which they apply friction for stopping, the rotors can eventually wear down and become less effective. When changing brake pads, a good technician will check the rotor. Typically, the rotor can be resurfaced once and be replaced the next time it needs service. Some vehicles have rotors that can be resurfaced more often, other cars have rotors that are too thin and must be replaced rather than serviced. It's always important to check with a certified technician about the best procedure.
