What an Exhaust System Does

Your exhaust system is connected to the engine via the manifold, which receives all the output of the cylinders (where the explosions happen). The manifold runs to the catalytic converter as well as the muffler, resonator, and other mufflers or chambers before the exhaust pipe. The exact order varies from car to car, but the catalytic converter takes harmful gases and converts them to a more harmless gas, while the muffler and resonator provide sound dampening for the combustion happening in the engine. These chambers also have sensors that record levels of various gases and they report back to the car computer if anything is out of their normal limits.
