Why a Check Engine Light Turns On

Your check engine light is an output of a computer that runs all your engine's sensors. These sensors are distributed throughout the engine's combustion and exhaust system, and they measure various levels and concentrations of fuel, exhaust, pollutants, and other chemicals in order to know how the engine is functioning. When one of those sensors detects an imbalance in the chemical makeup inside the engine or exhaust system, it sends a code to the computer saying what it detected. This code is logged and the computer turns on the check engine light.

What to Do When Your Check Engine Light Turns on

There are two ways a check engine light can turn on. The first is a solid light that stays on once the problem has occurred. This needs diagnosis, but you can still drive to where you're going and take care of it soon after. The second way is that your light flashes on and off. If this happens, pull your car over and call for a tow. This indicates imminent damage to your engine if you don't stop using it, and continuing to use the car can result in costly repairs or completely destroying the engine.
